The Times- Now GRA reform is dead, let this toxic debate end

JANICE TURNER | COMMENT Now GRA reform is dead, let this toxic debate end Janice Turner Monday June 15 2020, 12.01am, The Times P ublicly-funded trans lobby groups like Stonewall expected that changing the 2004 Gender Recognition Act to a system of gender “self-identity” would sail through. They persuaded Tory MP Maria Miller, then chairwoman of the Commons women and equalities committee, that allowing biological males to change birth certificates to female on their word alone, abolishing medical oversight, was mere “admin” for trans people and no one else’s business. Miller’s 2016 public consultation on the GRA discounted submissions from women’s groups that expressed concern that self-ID had grave implications for rape crisis centres, women’s prisons and refuges. The political playbook for introducing self-ID into law is set out in a document called “Only adults?” published by the law firm Dentons. It advises that “gender identity remained a more  difficult issue to win pu...

Revisions to the “equal treatment benchbook”, a 540-page guide from the Judicial College, have told judges: “There may be situations where the rights of a witness to refer to a trans person by pronouns matching their gender assigned at birth, or to otherwise reveal a pe...

I say that on the basis of an  interview  Nancy Kelley, Stonewall's CEO, did with the BBC’s Emma Barnett on  Woman’s Hour .  What’s important is not really anything that Kelley said, though some of that was indeed interesting and I’ll come to it in a second. What matters is that the interview took place at all, since that constitutes a significant shift in the way Stonewall does its work. Stonewall's instinct has been to largely avoid mainstream media and other political debates about its work on trans issues that is now its primary focus. Kelley has given ...
